Peacock Bros celebrates 120 year anniversary

Peacock Bros Melbourne building in 1928
Peacock Bros  celebrates this year its 120 year anniversary. Still run by the original family line that started the company back in 1888, Peacock Bros today have branches in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland New Zealand making them a large identification products and supplies companies in Australasia.

Peacock Bros started as a general printing company in 1888, producing among many things, binders for general ledgers used for stock control, dental records and real estate listings.

In the 1920’s Peacock Bros introduced Comptometers. These large mechanically adding machines were designed for business inventory recording and financial management. In later years Peacock Bros established Casio electronic calculators.

By the late 1960’s Peacock Bros became the exclusive Australia distributor for Weber Marking Systems that manufactured carbon stencils which could function as a customisable ink pad for placing identification on product cartons and packaging. At the time, everything was handwritten on cartons, the stencils increased this process by as much as 60 times faster.

In 1982, Weber Marking Systems released computer operated dot matrix barcode label printers, with Peacock Bros remaining as the exclusive Australia distributors, opening up a whole new market for barcode labelling and computer based warehouse management.

Later new developments, in computer technology, barcode labelling software packages and smarter barcode printers created an increased demand for labelling solutions and barcode identification systems.

Peacock Bros expanded and grew with this technology and constantly released into the Australian market better identification systems.

Starting with 5 flexographic label presses, they began to manufacture a range of self adhesive labels and tags to meet the new consumer demand. Today Peacock Bros has 13 label presses within three label printing plants located in Melbourne, Sydney and Auckland New Zealand.

1987 saw the introduction of the Zebra Technologies brand of thermal label printers. Zebra Technologies trained and certified Peacock Bros technical staff to provide local customer support here in Australia for their entire product range offering manufacturer backed service, technical support and repairs giving the company a technological advantage within the market.

Neil Crump became Managing Director in 1998 and identified even more business potential and new markets for the company. Neil Crump lead the way for purchasing 2 label printing businesses and 2 data capture companies to expand the scope of Peacock Bros, which today has a clientele within a wide range of industries including Transport and Logistics, Manufacturing, Food, Beverage, Pharmaceutical, Distribution and more.
